VISITING ARTIST TUTORIAL

Following my half hour tutorial with artist Ben Fitton, I have a lot of new ideas on where my work is going to lead. Following on from my previous post, I think change/movement is something I really want to bring to my work, and I have had the idea of perhaps experimenting with animation. I bought this up at the tutorial, and received a lot of useful ideas. Ben suggested that I try to order the slides I had with me into a narrative as if they were to be animated, and the photograph below is the result of this.

This exercise really helped me to see my work in a new light, as I hadn't thought to begin animating the slides I had already created. Ordering was also a way of grouping the slides and it helped me to identify the themes that were emerging from my experimentation. I think there are two main themes, which cover the majority of the slides.

Theme One: Film as a Material
The first row of slides is all about the film as a medium in itself. They are simply about applying different methods to the same material, and observing the effects.

Theme Two: Silhouettes and Shadows
I feel these few slides are very different from the film ones, in both their aesthetics and in their concepts. These slides would probably make a more traditional narrative; they are representative of something else (in this case shadows) as opposed to the film slides which don't represent anything other than themselves. They also create quite different effects (especially when projected)
