Following my off-site show, creating projections through 3-dimensional means is something I've been wanting to take forward. I've been wanting to take it to a more advanced level, with different materials and components, I wanted to see how extravagant I could make this process. The only problem was I wasn't quite sure why. Why make something from 20 complicated hanging components when the same projection would result from 5 simpler ones? I wasn't really sure what I wanted to achieve. Then whilst conducting some research, I realised what it was. I found the objective I struggle to define before. I want to make the object as different from the projection as possible. My favourite aspect of my piece The Sum of its Parts was the moment I turned the projector on, when these strange hanging shapes suddenly made sense. It's this moment of recognition, when something seemingly random, turns out to be intricately designed and calculated to such a degree it results in this thought out outcome. The bird is obviously a simple example of this, it's not hard to imagine what will appear from these black egg shapes and feathers. And that's where I want to go next; I want the 3-dimensional aspect to look completely different to its projection. I want to make the moment the projector turns on even more crucial (and I'd like to incorporate this moment into some further pieces as well).
